Performance hit using Compatibility?

To your knowledge, is there any performance hit with SQL 2005 when you set a database to a lower compatibility mode. IE from 9.0 to 7.0For the application I was working on, I noticed a 15%-20% speed hit when using 8.0 vs 9.0.
