Performance Help Help....
Database Server having (Report Server Database + Application Database)
Hardware Config - 4 CPU 1.6 ghz, 8 GB RAM, About 15 GB RAID x5 drive (75 gb
disk space)
Software - Windows 2K Advance Server SP4, SQL 2000 sp3
IIS Server ( Report Server, Application Website)
Hardware config - 2CPU (1130 mhz), 1 gb RAM
Software - Windows 2K Server SP4, Reporting Services with SP1
Flow of application - User visits the application web site, queries (data
size 2.3 million records for a month) the and internally application passes
this query to Report Server through URL and data comes back to the User.
This thing works fine as long user queries for 2-3 days of data, but it
starts throwing "Server not available..." if it goes beyond that. (I saw
that on the web server aspnet_wp.exe starts crashing)
Any suggestion or solutions are welcome. I'm thinking of putting Report
Server web site on the Database Server, but I want to avoid that as I don't
want to run IIS with SQL 2000 (may be I'm wrong).
Thanks in advance,
SuhaibDo you have the /3GB flag set in c:\boot.ini? Take a look at for some common
things

Another thing to do would be to monitor the Process | Privates bytes
performance counter for the aspnet_wp.exe process.

rending it as (html, pdf, etc?). How long does it take from query analyzer?
Are you sending lots of data to RS and letting it filter or letting the
query itself filter out the data before it arrives at RS?

for 5 days - 430,000.
have you some aggregated data?
Yes, but we are not using any filter option on Report Server side
does it SQL Server standard or enterprise edition?
enterprise
Have you try to use OLAP Cubes?
Not now.
We are upgrading our current Reports from pure html using ASP to ASP.NET
with Reporting Services. We used to allow user's to query data for 3
months, again these months were not prefined, user's were allowed to select
Jan to March or Feb to April, with Reporting Services we are not able cross
more than 3 days forget about going across 3 months.
Database is partitioned based on Month, Vendor, and Year ID (Currently we
just have one vendor and one month of data, so I can't balme my partiton)

wow!!!!
its very very big!!!
why do you return so many details in your report?
If you use aggregated function in RS, then the time to process the report
will be huge!!! in this case, I recommend to create multiple datasets (1 for
the detail, 1 for aggregated data with an SQL statement which do the
calculations (sums, group by...))
Maybe you can schedule the report and save it as a snapshot report. (or save
it as PDF in a network folder)

somemore and wait somemore. If your customer needs a data extract (for
instance to load their own datamart) then you should use DTS. Otherwise, you
should have reports that provide drill through that allows the customer to
get to the data they are interested in. No human is going to browse 430,000
rows. I suggest you look at how to do drill through. RS supports drill
through reports very cleanly and it is the way to go.
As far as scheduling a PDF. This would be a 5,000 page PDF report. This is
not reasonable to expect a system to do. I strongly suggest re-analyzing
your requirements and solutions. Nobody will have a solution for a 5,000
page report that is speedy. Again, if you are extracting data for someone's
datamart then use DTS.

Performance Dashboard Reports Error
All,
I'm using the new Performance Dashboard Reports tool, and I'm getting an error when trying to view the main dashboard report. It is:
Error: Difference of two datetime columns caused overflow at runtime.
Has anyone seen this error before and know how to correct it?
Thanks,
Eric
Applied fix from this Blog, and it corrected the error.

Eric
sqlPerformance counter on Report.
Our company used Reporting Services for a certain months.
One day, my administrator ask me if he can know each report's processing status.
For example, the average processing time of report name "Order Report".
Can the performance counters of reporting services do that?
Thanks alot!
As Benni said, using the DTS package we provide to export the contents of the ExecutionLog table is the best way to go (it is not a best practice to query this table directly, though)
There are no perfmon counters that you can use that will allow you to say "Specifically, give me information about report 'XZY'". However, there are some undocumented counters that will give you some of the same information as the execution log about the last run report. You can find info about them here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/bimusings/archive/2005/07/26/443511.aspx
|||I haven't found anything about that in the api, but there is a nice table in ReportServer-Database.
Take a look at dbo.ExecutionLog (and for getting the reportnames dbo.Catalog). dbo.ExecutionLog has some TimeXYZ columns wich give you the time in millis..

Performance baseline report
Hi all,
I want to create a server performance baseline report for my database server. I know I can use System Mointor and SQL Profiler to monitor the server by reading the "SQL Server Books Online". However, there have too many counters, I don't know which counters should I use. If I choose to use the counter, I don't know what is the expect value for the counter.
For example, SQL Server: Buffer Manger Object has almost 22 counters. Which counters should I monitor? If I monitor AWE Lookup Maps/Sec, then what is the expect value for the good performance.
Anyone know a good refer or test book can help me to create a basline report
Thank a lot!

|||Thanks the articles are really helpfull. Do you think the SqL Server Performance Monitoring and Management Tools such as SQL Diagnostic Manager or Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise are helpful? If I design to buy those tools, do I need to create my own performance baseline report.
|||The decision on purchasing those types of tools often depends on how many servers, databases you need to monitor per DBA and the nature of the databases, how critical they are to the business. Sometimes a "lightweight" shop can get by just buy rolling their own monitoring systems. But if you can get the money for the purchase, it certainly won't hurt! And some of them can really help a more junior level person get up to speed.
Personally, I liked Diagnostic Manager when I used it. I don't think you would really need to baseline separately if using DM. It has a repository to store the data captured and reporting functionality. It has built in reports and you can also write your own. So you can do trend reporting, analysis from a certain point in time and view changes, variances, etc. I know you can download a demo and try it out. Their support was good, company was helpful when evaluating this product - as well as others.
It's been too many years since I used Spotlight and years ago I didn't care for the performance overhead and all the junk in put in the database. I didn't like it, didn't feel it added much value and didn't like cleaning up from the install when we got rid of it. I know they've changed a lot since so I can't really give a decent opinion.
Not exactly the same thing but somewhat along the same lines and as long as we're on the general subject, have you looked at the Performance Dashboard reports from Microsoft? They are more to provide information at a given point in time in terms of performance. But you can export the reports out to files if needed. They are lightweight and do a good job of assessing performance issues, allowing drill through into various areas. You need to be on SQL 2005 SP2 to use them. No other requirements and they are free. performance
When I design the report use VB.Net and view the report by using the
Preview tab and take about 1 min to get the result. However, once I deploy
the report and view the report through Report Manager, it take about a hour
to get the result. Why this happen? Anyone can help me on this?
Thanks,
KentKent,
When the report is previewed in the Report Designer the RS web facades are
bypassed. Instead, the Report Designer invokes the Report Server report
rendering functions directly. Perhaps, your performance issue is network
related. Does the Report Manager comes up quickly when you navigate from one
folder to another? If you believe that this is report rendering issue, look
at the Execution Log to find out how much time the Report Server spends in
querying, processing and rendering the report.

Hope this helps.

Many of the tables I report against are between 1 and 10 million rows. Most
of my reports take just a few seconds. How many records are shown in the
final report. How many records are in the base table. Are you using query
parameters or filters. Filters bring all the data over and then filters it.
Query parameters perform the filter at the server and only bring down the
resulting data.

Percentages of subtotals
in brackets the percentage of the subtotal that each value is in the row. I
am not sure how to do this. Does anyone have any ideas? On Sep 27, 4:00 pm, "Fresno Bob" <nos...@.nospam.com> wrote:

You should be able to use an expression similar to the following:
=(Fields!SomeField.Value/Sum(Fields!SomeField.Value) ) * 100
-or- if this doesn't work due to automatic summing in the matrix
control, you might need to do something like this (I think):
=(Sum(Fields!SomeField.Value)/Total) * 100
For the brackets, you will need to select F4 (Properties Window) once
you have selected the field. In the Format section enter an expression
similar to the following:
="[#,.00%]"
Hope this helps.

Percentage of total column in Report Builder
We are the using the end-user tool Report Builder. I want to create a
'Percentage of total' column to a certain table. For example:
Value Percentage of total
Region A 200 20%
Region B 500 50%
Region C 300 30%
--
Total 1000 100%
How can I achieve that?
Regards,
Jaap MosselmanHello Jaap,
I sugget you add a new field in the Report Build which calculate the
Percentage of the total.
And you could format the column to show as the percentage.
Hope this helps.

value (in this example 1000) to use as denominator?
Value Percentage of total
Region A 200 20%
Region B 500 50%
Region C 300 30%
--
Total 1000 100%

=IIF(sum(Fields!Yourvalue.value), "yourdataset")>0, fields!YourValue.Value /
sum(Fields!YourValue.Value, "yourdataset"))
Or you could do the summing in your dataset, and just use it as a normal
field.

Yes, you could use, but with some modification.
In the Report Builder, you may Edit the Formula of a cell. And you could
use the IF function and SUM function.
Hope it helps.

I reproduce this issue.
The SUM(Total Area) only sum the field in the record.
You may need to aggregate the filed in the raw data and regenerate the
report model.
Hope this helps.

because you don't know which selections and filters the end user is
creating.
Please, place it on the wishlist to have an option to do a 'percent of
total' formatting.
OK, for some specific situations, you can do it the hardcodes way you
suggested.

Percentage Format problem with Subreports
Hello;
I have a container Report with some SubReports. I need the percentage fields with just 1 decimal.
Inside the SubReports I have fields with percentages and I have all of them with Format: P1
If I run the subreport, I see the percentage fields correctly.
But when I run the container Report some/several are with 2 decimals.
Thanks for help
Luis
Check all of your formatting codes on the parent report (I'm assuming that's what you mean by container report).
Just because you put the format P1 on the subreport doesn't mean the parent report automatically adapts to this change.
