Performance hit
We have a table with approx 3.5 million rows. Queries against it are slow.
One particular query which does a LIKE search on an invoice number takes 10
seconds to return 5 rows. There is a datatype conversion issue in the LIKE
search but still the queries agains this are slow. If i split index and data
into seperate files would it help. How can i split the data in a table to
seperate files?
Thanks
NavinHi.,
Before splitting the Non clusteredd Index and data into seperate files try
to do these:-
1. Check your select statement is using an index using Execution plan
2. Execute DBCC SHOWCONTIG and see the table is fragmented. If fragmented
remove the fragmentation by DBCC DBREINDEX
3. Run the Update statistics on the tables in FROM Clause
Thanks

>There is a datatype conversion issue in the LIKE search<
Indexing cannot help queries that do not have SARG'able (Search
Argument'able) predicates. Eg, if you use 'LIKE %xxx' in your WHERE clause,
no index can possibly help because index values are read left to right &
having the wildcard at the beginning means any row can potentially qualify
for the results and needs to be read.
You should post the table definition, the index definition & the query so we
have a meaningful chance of advising whether any specific index would be
useful.
I'd also suggest that you look into using the Index Tuning Wizard as it is
very good at recommending indexes.

Hi Navin,
Try adding an index with (or modifying an existing index) with
invoice_number as the FIRST column. Or change the column order on one of
the existing indexes that already cover invoice_number.
Note that changing an existing index might hurt performance of other
queries whereas adding an index will hurt insert, update and delete
performance.
Best, Hugo

Thanks

Thanks
Navin
Hi.,
Before splitting the Non clusteredd Index and data into seperate files try
to do these:-

Performance effect of using maxOccurs="unbounded"
In our application we have a few elements in our schema where we have not set limits on the number of occurences. For these particular elements, the maxOccurs attribute is set to "unbounded".
Does this have any performance effect on any XML indexes that we may add later to improve performance? Does it slow anything down internally in SQL Server when performing any DML operations on our stored XML?
It does not make a difference to XML indexing whether maxOccurs is set to unbounded or a fixed value (> 1, say 6). A separate entry is created in the XML index for each occurrence of the element. So index lookup and other other optimizations will occur the same way. There should be no performance difference between the two choices.
If maxOccurs is 1, then you should set it to 1.
Thank you,

Performance degradation after 450 user connections.
concurrent connections reaches 450 and above, the performance of the
server drops significantly. 450 seems to be a magic number, anything
below it doesn't effect performance.
We have a large SQL 2k Ent environment that should be able to handle a
lot more users. Server has 16 processors, 7 gig of ram dedicated to
sql, and a fast EMC SAN. Cache hit ration is high, I/O normal, CPU
utilization at 35%.
The locking on the tables is minimal, all the queries use "nolock"
hint and we have no ad-hoc updates/inserts.
Application that connects to the db gets very slow however, and
connecting (opening a new window) through query analyzer takes up to a
minute.
None of the connections use significant amount of resources and
connection are closed properly.
What else should I be looking at?i am certain sql server ought to handle atleast 700-800
connections
what might be happening in your case is that too much
memory is allocated to buffers in the lower 3GB of address
space (memory >4GB is handled by PAE) that not enough
address space is left for network connections
try -g100 (where 100 is in MB) or some other values for
the SQL Server startup parameter
this can be done in Computer Management->Services on the
properties page for MSSQLSERVER at the bottom
you will need to stop the service first

minimum query plan threshold for switching to parrallel execution is
5, I suspect that this could be the cause of all the context
switching. 5 seems to be very low based on our queries.
I will try switching to fibers to see if this helps, but is there a
formula to figure out the parallel execution threshold based on the
CPU speed?|||Another thing to try is to see what the "max worker threads" setting is, via
sp_configure (it is an advanced option). The default setting of this option
is 255, in order to prevent thrashing. If your CPU utilization is pretty
low, you can try increasing this setting and see if it makes a difference.
Typically if there is a difference in response time as opposed to
throughput, it is possible it is because requests are waiting for a thread
to execute.
Something that was not clear from your mail is whether the slowdown happened
after all the connections are established, while just running queries, or
whether the slowdown was just in connect time. If the slowdown was just
during connect time, do you have NT authentication turned on ? There was a
bug in SQL Server (which has since been fixed) where if the DC was not
responding fast, SQL Server used to unnecessarily hold threads while doing
the logon. If you're not running on the latest QFE rollup, that would be
another thing to consider doing, and it should fix this particular issue if
that's what you're having.

Performance Counters on Service Broker Transmission Queue
Hello,
is there built-in support for monitoring the number of elements in the transmission queue via performance counters?
Thanks,
There's no perfmon counter. Something like count () or sp_spaceused would be required to query the count. The message send perfmon counters probably are a better indication of what's happening at the connection level - depending on what you're trying to measure.|||No performance counter. See this post for an efficient query to return the number of rows in the hidden table that represents the transmission queue: http://blogs.msdn.com/remusrusanu/archive/2006/11/08/fast-way-to-check-message-count.aspx

Percentile Calculation
I have around 1000 employee records containing employee number and their salary. How do i calculate percentile on these records?
For example
How to calculate 25th Percentile on Salary of these 1000 records?
Hope I am clear with my question.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
qALook up the "TOP n [PERCENT]" clause in Books Online.
select top 25 percent * from [YourTable]|||Hi,
Thanks for your immediate response. But you got it wrong. Its not Percentage, its PERCENTILE. If you have used MS-Excel there is a function called
PERCENTILE(Array, k)
For example if I have 10,20,30,40,50 as values
then 30th PERCENTILE of this comes as 22
Thanks
qA|||No, I don't get how the calculation is done. And Excel's Books Online (which is normally very good at describing statistical functions) gives no explanation of the algorithm at all.|||Wikipedia, while citing Excel's function as an example, appears to me to be describing behavior similiar to TOP %:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percentile|||Hi,
The top clause in a query will return one ore more than one records. But Percentile will always return one and only one value.|||Yes, but how to calculate that value? I found this lovely quote:
"There is no universally accepted definition of a percentile."
on this website: http://cnx.rice.edu/content/m10805/latest/
Very curious. I guess what intrigues me is that I have been using Excel and doing applied business statistics and data mining for more than a decade and have not run into this, or ever used that Excel function before.
Try describing what you want to do, without referring to the Excel function.|||OK, the more I research PERCENTILE calculation, the more I understand why I've never used it. It is about the stupidest statistical measure I have ever seen. Why? Because makes a strict linear interpolation between just two data points out of the set, without any regard to the distribution of the data.
As an example, the 30th percentile of your values (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) is 22, as Excel calculates it. But the 30th percentile of the following values (0, 10, 20, 1000, 1000000) is...guess what...also 22.
I see no practical purpose for such a measure unless your goal is to mislead your audience.
